Hon. Linda Somiari-Stewart Launches "Project War Canoes of Economic Empowerment" in Okrika.
In a historic event held at Chukunibiri, Ogoloma in Okrika Local Government area of Rivers State, the Honourable Linda Somiari-Stewart, Deputy Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly and member representing Okrika Constituency, launched the groundbreaking Project War Canoes of Economic Empowerment.
This initiative aims to revive the socio-economic significance of war canoe houses while fostering unity and economic growth within the Okrika community.
Addressing a gathering of traditional chiefs, war canoe house leaders, beneficiaries, and distinguished guests, Hon. Somiari-Stewart emphasized the historical and cultural importance of war canoe houses as pillars of Ijaw heritage. “Our war canoe houses have long been symbols of resilience, collective strength, and economic cooperation. Today, we take a significant step forward to strengthen the dream of our forefathers by empowering 30 individuals from Chukunibiri’s three constituent war canoe houses,” she stated.
The project provides financial support for petty trading, traditional craftsmanship, and other economic ventures, aiming to foster prosperity for individuals, households, and the wider community. It seeks to revive the bonds of unity and mutual aid that have defined the war canoe houses for generations.
Leaders of the three war canoe houses , Chief Earnest Afiesimama of Nangibo War Canoe House, Chief Barrister Iyala Somiari of Somiari War Canoe House and Chief Barrister Tamunokuro Somiari of AmieJubodie War Canoe House, expressed profound gratitude to Hon. Somiari-Stewart for her generosity and commitment. They described the initiative as “a novel idea to bring back the glory of war canoe houses ” and promised to institute a follow-up mechanism to monitor the beneficiaries and ensure the project’s success.
In her address, Hon. Somiari-Stewart underscored the collective effort required to make the initiative a success. “A canoe moves forward only when all its paddlers row in harmony. Together, we can chart a path towards shared prosperity anchored in the values of unity, hope, and mutual support,” she declared. She also called on well-meaning individuals to support the program under the structured supervision of their war canoe house leaders.
The Honourable member assured the community of her commitment to sustaining the project and extending it to other war canoe houses in her constituency.
The event marked a new chapter for the people of Chukunibiri and the entire Okrika community, setting the stage for a resurgence of the age-old system of economic empowerment through the traditional war canoe house system.
In their various responses, the beneficiaries thanked Hon. Somiari-Stewart and promised to be accountable to their War Canoe Chiefs and chairmen as a way of building faith in the project and ensuring its success in Okrika Constituency.
Beneficiaries were immediately credited with one hundred thousand naira each for petty trading and traditional ijaw crafts, such as basket weaving and fish rackets.
